If you happened to read my review of last nights PNC Arts Center show, it was obvious that although I enjoyed the show, I wasn't exactly blown away. Tonights show at Jones Beach, however, took everything I felt last night, and raised it to a point on the scale unknown in the history of mankind. Every minute detail was just so much better. The weather was just fantastic, about 75 degrees, totally clear, with a nice steady breeze. This venue is an open air venue located near the Atlantic Ocean, and the smell of the cool sea air was totally invigorating. It also helped that for this show I was in familiar territory, with my best friend, as opposed to traveling alone in unkown areas, meeting people for the first time. It also helped that Jones Beach does not sell alcohol inside(I never thought I'd say that.) Although there was a helthy amount of drinking in the lot ( i had a couple too) , this was a sober, alert, well mannered crowd, as opposed to the slobbered drunk, screaming whistling, walking through the aisles crowd at PNC. And the performance, oh man, did it ever exceed the previous nights effort.

I don't know if it was the natural accoustics of PNC, which has a circular roof held up by columns, or the mix, or both that had a detrimental effect on the sound. It just seemed that the guitar solos sounded very flat, there was no sweetness to them, no dynamic. At certain points I found myself disappointed. Tonight, from the very first note of In The Flesh , it was obvious that this was gonna be a different ballgame. For example at Jones Beach tonight during Welcome To The Machine, I was able to hear each pulse clearly, as opposed to PNC where it seemed like just one long Sub woffer blast. The guitar solos had all the sweetness you could imagine, they were tight,and consise. Roger himself seemed completely invigorated, really playing with the crowd in front, gesturing, and even shaking hands a few times.

I'm sitting here now trying to figure out the words to describe the magic that was experienced tonight. I find it near impossible. The Amused To Death Songs were absolutely stunning in their clarity, and connection with the crowd. You could literally hear a pin drop during Its A Miracle . The Powers That Be was a sonic tour de force, with a blistering chorus, and rapid fire delivery of the words by Roger. Rogers voice was fantastic, he really hit all the tough parts.

All I can say is that if this show was representive of the majority of this tour, and you have tickets to an upcoming show, you are in for a hell of a treat. This was simply magic at Jones Beach. I'd love to hear from anyone who attended both the PNC show and Jones Beach shows, to see if they feel the same way.

If you mention to anyone who knows anything about music that you were going to see Roger Waters in concert the first thing they would ask is, "Is he playing any Pink Floyd songs?" The answer is YES!

Last night in New York, Roger Waters re-claimed his title as the man behind Pink Floyd. Playing many of the songs that David Gilmour did in his last two concert tours (Shine On.., Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, etc.) Waters performed the same songs magnificently to a sold out crowd in Jones Beach. Without the big budget that Gilmour needs, Roger Waters took the election by a landslide. All questions have now been answered. It's over. Roger Waters kicked Gilmour's ass, big time.

Some notes: Roger played a lot of guitar, even an little acoustic solo part at the end of South Hampton Dock. Roger played electric guitar (Washburn) for Comfortably Numb. He played guitar on almost every song. The acoustic guitar was a cutaway Guild, the bass was a black Fender P-Bass with a maple fretboard. You could tell he was really enjoying the guitar playing. I couldn't tell what kind amp he used.

Bramhall played strats (and I think a G&L strat) through the new Yahamha digital amp into a Marshall half stack. There was also a new Fender Hot Rod Deluxe next to the Marshall. Snowy White played a PRS though Hiwatt amps into a Marshall half stack and he also played the same Washburn that Roger used on Comf.Numb. Andy F-W played strats through ? Graham Broad played a huge Tama set with Rototoms for Time. Jon Carin played a Kurtzweil keyboard and a Guild acoustic on Dogs. The four guitarist had there own large strob tuner (looked like an old radio) by the door in the stage.

Bramhall played some Hendrix-like guitar for the Comf. Numb ending.

Highlights: Everything.

I just wanted to chime in with my thoughts regarding the show...

First, hiccups...

  1. There were probably between a half dozen and a dozen engineering blips throughout the evening...wrong mike on, camera shot on the guitarist NOT playing the solo, etc. Nothing horrible, but somewhat distracting at times.
  2. Snowy White missed a couple of his key notes (1 stands out in Dogs).
  3. Not nearly enough Final Cut.

That being said, Ho-ly Shit! What an excellent ride Roger has put together for us.

Quite well represnted were: WYWH, Animals (Dogs LIVE should be enough incentive to knock ANY of you off the fence), DSotM, Wall, and ATD. Final Cut, Pros and Cons, and Radio KAOS are slightly represented. Missing are the early Floyd albums...PatGoD, OBC, Meddle, AHM.

Other than the aforementioned hiccups, the band was -tight-, so critical when playing Floyd and RW...the new guitarist (Doyle?, Boyle?) did a great job. Consider what this guy is going through right now: He knows that practically everyone attending these shows knows not only every word to the songs, but every NOTE. He does a standup job of spelling Dave in the important parts and mixing it up a little bit to show us that he's not just an automaton with his dial set to "Gilmour". He sings most of Dave's parts well, my only critique is that he needs to be a little more expressive.

Snowy White does a great job, as does Andy Fairweather-Lowe(?). Drums were so perfect it's almost as if they had a soundtrack on. Jon Carin stands out as putting everything into his music (synth, keyboards and slide guitar). He sings Dogs almost as if he's one of us up there, living out a lifelong dream of performing the perfect song, to a crowd of attentive fans, with Roger's okay...WOW!

Last, but certainly not least, the backup singers were nothing short of fantastic! It's been said before in a previous message, but the one girl's part in Perfect Sense Pt. 1 is done, sorry, but "perfectly". With compassion, fear, indignation, and resignation touching every member of the crowd, delivered on the tender but firm fingertips of her voice.

As for Roger, I was literally amazed. He looks great, was extremely charismatic, and truly made everyone in the audience feel that he was just as happy that we were there as we were that he was there. Certainly not the feeling I received from Mr. Gilmour and Co. last time around.

If you are undecided, but love Floyd and Waters, get ANY TICKET you possibly can to this show. This review is from a guy who sat in the last row at Jones Beach (sec 20, V28), with limited access to binoculars, and at no time was I disappointed in my seats.

Trust me. Go to the Show.
