Other bands that Waters fans may like

Music, lyrics, and overall quality of a band are rated with * * * * * being the best rating. There aren't really that many groups that have been compared to Waters, so the bands here might be similar to Pink Floyd instead. The catch is that Lyrics will have a greater affect on the overall rating than music. This should help give you an idea of which bands are a little more like Waters.

My Additions

The The

This group isn't one you will normally hear as being like PF. Rather I think they are like RW in one way - Lyrics. The music won't really remind you of either PF or RW, but the lyrics deal with serious issues and are very poetic at times. This band has been together since the early 80's, but don't let that fool you. They don't sound at all like a normal 80's band. Dusk is, in my opinion, their best album.

Peter Gabriel

I wouldn't consider Peter Gabriel that much like Roger Waters, but his lyrics do deal with serious issues fairly often. For this reason I feel that a Waters fan may like his music. Gabriel's music has a distinctive and melodic tone to it. I've found that his non-singles are completely different from his singles ('Shock the Monkey','Sledgehammer', etc...). I would definitely give his greatest hits album, Shaking the Tree, a try. For a completely different sound check out Passion.

XTC

This is a group that you will hear compared to PF rather often. For the life of me I can't figure out why. I like some of their music, but the 'nursery rhyme' tones that some of the songs carry are just to much for me at times. If you decide to give this band a try I would stick to either Skylarking or Nonsuch. If I were to just use these two albums to rate the band I would rate their musically quality much higher, but since I'm rating them on all their works, you will notice that their musical rating is rather low.

Rush

This band has been around about as long as PF and are continually compared to PF. The only problem, again imo, is that they have changed their music to suit the times. 2112 sounds a good deal like PF while the new stuff is more in the pop music category. Still, you may want to give them a try. 2112 is the best album, but as a sampler of all their stuff you may want to try their greatest hits collection called Chronicles.

Marillion

A vastly underrated band, whose first four albums with frontman Fish cannot be recommended too highly. Often compared to Genesis, in fact their music has distinct influences from Pink Floyd. I believe their finest hour is Clutching at Straws, an album of despair, alcoholism, social disintegration, and futility.

Fish

In scope, Fish's work is as broad as Waters', moving smoothly from the intensely personal to the grand political issues. The music is complex, and more rocky than Waters - Fish is the consummate live performer. In my opinion, Fish is also a marginally better lyricist. His best solo album is Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, but most of his best work was done when he was with Marillion.
