The success of an Internet site is often measured by how many visitors it attracts. While I'd argue that this is far from the best means to measure the worth of a site, I've always used the visitor statistics for the SmallCanadles sites as a means to gauge how well the sites are constructed. The size of the fanbase for each artist obviously helps determine the magnitude of the numbers, but often changes in a site result in fairly quick increases in the number of visitors.

As an example, The Feeling Begins is a page that has been around since 1997. Up until the summer of 2000, I had devoted very little time to improving the site. At the end of July 2000, I began a re-design of the site which included the addition of several new sections and informational areas. Just a month after these changes were made, the number of unique visitors had moved up a small but significant amount. More importantly, the number of page hits went up dramatically. Since the number of unique visitors had only risen slightly, this indicates that each visitor was, on average, taking more time to browse the site. This indicates to me that many visitors found the site worth their time -- or at least worth more of their time than prior to the changes.
